Suddenly the words “going green” are everywhere. We see
them on TV, in magazines, in newspapers, in home improvement stores and
in our grocery stores. Advertisements promote new green products, gadgets
and technologies. “Green” awards are given to businesses
and organizations that conserve, inspire and help people go green.
Going green is in.
It is cool, but it is more than just a trend. Going green is a lifestyle
with an eco-friendly approach to everything – from
doing laundry, to driving fuel-efficient cars, to building homes made
of sustainable or recycled materials, to conserving electricity and water,
and to eating a greener diet. It is the many small changes that we can
make in our everyday lives that add up to a big impact on our environment.
As individuals, and as members of the Kalamazoo Garden Club, we have
been going green for years as we work to conserve, protect and beautify
our earth. We are creative and active workers; teachers and learners;
leaders and servers; advocates, facilitators and zealous stewards for
the present and the future.
This year our programs will reflect our awareness of the importance
of going green. With topics on turf grasses, natural landscapes, creative
flower arrangements, healthy houseplants, organic foods and weeds, we
will learn and discover new ways of protecting and enhancing our world.
The future is in our hands and going green together will be an exciting
adventure, full of learning, fellowship, friendship, and service. It
will be a journey of finding out simple changes we must make in our lifestyles
to start putting more back into the earth than we take out. And, in the
process, we will improve our little piece of the universe.
